I spend more time on the road than I do in your arms When my night falls, your sun rises; I’m out with the tide I will wait for dawn to break, the road is long but I’ll find my way ‘Cause I’ve been running from my troubles The more I fear the less I want to stay There’s my city, lights shimmering on the skyline Oh, Manchester you look so pretty in the night time Hello my rain-soaked, red-brick respite I’m coming home I’m coming home When I miss you, I just tell myself to live each minute as I go I love the journey, to move so easy and return to the place that I know The only thing I know that’s certain is the way that everything can change And in the wake we sway, we tumble and our hearts are what remain There’s my city, lights shimmering on the skyline Oh, Manchester you look so pretty in the night time Hello my rain-soaked, red-brick respite I’m coming home I’m coming home There’s my city, lights shimmering on the skyline Oh, Manchester you look so pretty in the night time Hello my rain-soaked, red-brick respite I’m coming home I’m coming home I’m coming home

Peacemaker 03:40
If I have the power to bestow a little luck and favour And if I have the means to help you grow a little further I would gladly give them Though your entry to this world wasn’t easy baby, In your eyes I can see all the depths of ages And I can’t wait to see you shine You’ll be You’ll be You’re gonna be a peacemaker When the day comes that you can talk to your big brother When you throw your arms around your father and your mother I’ll be watching with a smile And if you need me I will be there to guide you To help you listen to the voice that is inside you Ah, if you lose your way You’ll be You’ll be You’re gonna be a peacemaker You’ll be You’ll be You’re gonna be a peacemaker

To The Sea 04:40
I know of a road that leads to the sea From my back door, if we tread carefully In the dead of night we can feel our way through the dark Yes I am a dreamer, won’t you stay and dream with me Of all the places we could go to, the places we could leave And I know I’ve got no money but I’m as rich as I can be ‘Cause it’s just like Dolly sings it And although everyone has tried True love ain’t found in riches… it’s right here by my side How far can a crow fly? How high can the largest eagle soar? How long will you love me? ‘Cause if the truth be told, that’s all my heart really wants to know I can help you, we can figure it out And I won’t fight you – I will always be around And you’ll be safe now You’ll be safe now They may say that it won’t last That all our love, given half the chance Would ebb away ‘til there’s nothing left but pain What do they know? It’s our own damn world The ocean is waiting, so let’s follow that road I’m speaking from love Not the fear of anyone How far can a crow fly? How high can the largest eagle soar? How long will you love me? ‘Cause if the truth be told, that’s all my heart really wants to know I can help you, we can figure it out And I won’t fight you – I can always be around And we’ll be safe now We’ll be safe now

Never give up, never surrender Times like this, don’t let it defeat ya Harness that energy, don’t let it sink ya Keep your head above water They’re spinning dreams made of sweet, sweet lies Pulling the wanting up and letting them slide Good intentions but restless vibes Forgetful of promises Success is a liar, he’s a slippery fish He’s an egg and a spoon and high-heeled shoes Rolling on down and rolling on through When you’re just as good as news
5.
In The End 03:38
So the world you knew has come crashing down And you’re left alone in this empty house Too much to think, too little to lose So you’re tying the laces on your walking shoes When you’ve been fed lies and you can’t pretend When you’re struggling and you need a friend When you think the darkness will never end Everything’s always all right in the end If he wanted out, but he wouldn’t come clean If he’s never said just what he means And she was waiting in the wings Starry-eyed and wondering When you’ve lost your heart and you can’t pretend When you’re struggling and you need a friend When you think the darkness will never end Everything’s always all right in the end Tonight you’ll sing beauty to cover the pain To throw out your sorrow again and again And you’ll know by the strength of your siren song If he goes tonight, he’s forever gone When fate has spoken and you can’t pretend When you’re struggling and you need a friend When you think the darkness will never end Everything’s always all right in the end

I’m gonna get myself in trouble I’m gonna speak my bloody mind What’s the worst thing that could happen? I might lose some friends I’ve never met and aren’t likely to again I’m gonna sabotage, camouflage, cause my career to haemorrhage Just to see if there’s any substance to this mirage I’m gonna jump with both feet across that line I’m gonna drink right past when they’re calling time And I reserve the right to be asinine ‘Cause this mouth is mine, and there’s still time To sabotage, camouflage, cause my career to haemorrhage Just to see if there’s any substance to this mirage I’m gonna get myself arrested I’m gonna speak my bloody mind What’s the worst thing that could happen? I might lose some friends I’ve never met and aren’t likely to again Three cheers to the one who takes the slack For my increasing lack of tact Every time I interact, in every situation I’m gonna get myself in trouble I’m gonna speak my bloody mind What’s the worst thing that could happen? I might lose some friends I’ve never met and aren’t likely to again

Is this what you meant to do? Is this what you meant to say? When she came to you wide-eyed, Then covered and turned away. Are there shadows in her truth? Are you fleeting in her heart? Is your friendship nothing more Than a reflection of the past She’ll put a fire in your heart And an ocean in your stomach babe Make you want to break apart She’ll put a fire in your heart There’s a song in there somewhere In all the things you cannot say You feel bound, but you don’t understand That she’s on some other way You know that you should let go You know that it isn’t real And I wonder if you’d still want her If she offered you the real deal She’s put a fire in your heart And an ocean in your stomach babe Makes me want to break apart She’s put a fire in your heart Be careful what you wish for ‘Cos it just might come true And you’ll be trapped along the border Between unhappiness and ingénue If you can keep your distance You’ll be just fine, you see ‘Cos getting what you want Can be the death of any fantasy She’ll put a fire in your heart And an ocean in your stomach babe Make you want to break apart When she puts a fire in your heart

Blood & Bone 05:45
There’s a death in your ignorance, my friend To let it go is to let it slide again Connection’s down, would you let it lie? Would you like to re-try? There’s a crack in your pedestal my friend To stay my hand is to let you fall again Drop the ball, add a final layer to the wall Ooh, ooh… I wanna know, are you a hero or a friend? If I push you which way are you gonna bend? I’ve got a feeling I’ll be here until the end The bitter end All these feelings are grown in blood and in bone It’s hard to know what to take and what to leave alone To set me free… when I’m with you I’m still on my own And I know that to survive we’ve gotta change Although I’m brave, I fear it all the same But if I don’t go, if I don’t walk away, only a fool remains Ooh, ooh… I wanna know, are you a hero or a friend? If I push you which way are you gonna bend? I’ve got a feeling I’ll be here until the end Don’t try to hold me or I might slip away In darkness, or in the light of day But I’ve a feeling I’ll be here until the end The bitter end

On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue I saw the danger, yet I walked along the enchanted way And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion's pledge The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay - O I loved too much and by such, by such, is happiness thrown away I gave her gifts of the mind, I gave her the secret sign that’s known To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone And in word and tint, I did not stint for I gave her poems to say With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow That I had wooed not as I should a creature made of clay - When the angel woos the clay he’d lose his wings at the dawn of day.

about

Written and recorded over a series of weekends from August 2013, carrying on a collaboration that began with their meeting in Feb 2012 at a musical residency with The Unthanks - 'East by North West' is the product of two independent singer-songwriters combining their talents to become much more than the sum of their parts.

The album is named for the fact that Raevennan was living in Lowestoft, the most Easterly point of the UK, and Tracey was in Manchester in the North-West of England when they began writing together. Roads, land and sea featured in that journey, which can be heard throughout the album in some of its themes.
